his sixty-eighth birthday and more than half a century of employment for the
company. On September 8, 1913, he was employed at the age of 14 as an errand
boy in the sewing department at the Boyertown plant. About a year later he was
transferred to the cloth covering department as an apprentice, under the supervision
of Daniel D. Leidy. In 1915 he again transferred to the wood lining department
and learned his trade under the supervision of Jacob Derr and later Grant M.
Eddinger. He continued on this job until 1933 when he was appointed and accepted
a transfer to Boyertown's Columbus Branch to take charge of the trimming department.
He remained in charge of the trimming department for over four years when he
asked to be relieved of the responsibilities of managing the department in favor
of regular production work on both hardwood and metal caskets as a journeyman
casket upholsterer. On November 13, 1947 he again returned to the Boyertown plant
and accepted the position of casket upholsterer in the metal lining department.
For the past several years Mr. Grim has served as a lining instructor in both
wood and metal lining departments. He estimates that he has trained about twenty-five

five decades of work, Mr. Grim stated that he is looking forward to his retirement.
He plans to become a member of the Golden Age club, and then, he added, "I'm
going to act lazy for a while."
