Fourth Generation
79. Jacob BROTZMAN1 was born on 16 Jul 1779 in Montgomery
County, PA. He died on 26 Jan 1856 in Shawnee, PA. He
was buried in Shawnee Cemetery, PA. Jacob moved to Warren County,
New Jersey where he served as a founding Freeholder of Warren Co. when the county
was established in 1825. Jacob had aquired 1000 acres of land along the Delaware
river, 400 acres of it in Pennsylvania. Jacob's property is now thought to be
the southern portion of what is now Delaware Water Gap State Park. In addition
to the family farm, Jacob had an apple orchard, grist mill and saw mill. Son
Samuel also built a saw mill on the Pennsylvania side of the property. Quite
a lumbering business was started, with both mills running 24 hours a day, thru
the winter, to produce product for the spring markets. Lumber was rafted down
the Delaware to markets at Easton, Phillipsburg and Trenton. As Jacob and Susanna
prospered, they built a hotel for area travelers. The hotel and farm buildings
became the village of Brotzmanville. The exact location is described as three
miles north of the Delaware Water Gap, opposite Walker's Ferry. Soon added to
this empire was a distillery, hog farm and a large shad fishery.
Jacob served one term with the NJ State Legislature, in 1835. He was appointed
to the State Senate to fill a vacancy, by the Governor, and was elected to several
terms thereafter. Son Samuel ran the business while Jacob was in Trenton. This
story continues as a legend; although you would think much of it would be public
knowledge in a 1850's news paper. Jacob built a rail road spur south, along the
Delaware. The debris from clearing the land was dumped into the Delaware. Political
rivals of Jacob's had a law passed which required Jacob to remove the debris
from the river. Which Jacob did, at the cost of bankruptcy. We do know that
most of Jacob's children migrated to Susquehanna County. Jacob and Susanna are
thought to have grown feeble with age and both lived their remaining years with
their daughter Catherine, then Mrs. Anthony Transue, of Shawnee, PA. Jacob
BROTZMAN and Susanna METZGAR were married on 8 Jul 1804. Susanna
METZGAR1 was born on 24
May 1782 in Bucks County, PA. She died on 4 May 1859 in Shawnee,
PA. She was buried in Shawnee Cemetery, PA. Susanna is
thought to be a daughter of General Metzgar, of the National Army of Holland.
