169.
Jeremiah D. BITTING Esq.23,24,30,40 was born on 27 May 1818 in Cumru
Township, Berks Co., PA. He was baptized on 23 Nov 1818 in Trinity
Lutheran Church, Reading, PA. He died on 26 Apr 1891 in Philadelphia,
PA. Jeremiah was born on the Bitting Homestead, then Cumru Township.
His formal education lead to his law profession and admittance to the Berks County
Bar on 8 August 1838. He studied law with the late Henry Smith. He was elected
High Sheriff of Berks County 1859 to 1862. Montgomery's History of Berks County
speaks of Jeremiah as a "man of commanding appearance, tall and well built".
He served in Philadelphia, as Quartermaster for 53rd PA Militia, which was mustered
into service first week in July 1863 and apparently determined quite quickly
they were not required as all were discharged by August 20, 1863. Jeremiah apparently
found something he liked in Philadelphia, as records would indicate he didn't
return to Reading. The 1870 census has Jeremiah as an attorney in Philadelphia,
and his first wife, Catharine was "keeping house" in 5th Ward of Reading
with son William. By 1880 census, Jeremiah was married to a Maryann, she was
born Jan 1828 per 1900 census, and he resided at 1422 11th Street, Philadelphia.
He was noted as a freight agent, while a note on his death in the Reading Eagle
said he was in the clothing business. The Reading note makes no mention of his
wife and probable step daughter, Ida L. Newman, born 1852. Would assume Ida was
a daughter of Maryann by an earlier marriage. Per his Philadelphia death record,
listed online, he was again noted as an attorney and resided last at 3062 Clifton
Street. He died from Dysentery. Philadelphia says he was buried at Hanover Grounds,
a cemetery now removed, burials taken to Forrest Hills, Montgomery County and
Fernwood Cemetery, Delaware County. Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania is suppose
to have records. The Reading Eagle quotes his brother as saying the remains were
returned to Reading. The Public Ledger Newspaper of Philadelphia had only a death
notice, burial private.
Jeremiah D. BITTING Esq. and Catharine S. NAGLE were married on 14 Apr 1839
in Reading, PA. Catharine S. NAGLE38,40,46 (daughter of George NAGLE and
Eva Maria SCHOENFELDER) was born on 28 Feb 1820 in Reading, PA. She
was baptized on 30 Apr 1820 in Trinity Lutheran Church, Reading, PA.
She died on 13 Feb 1905 in Reading, PA. She was buried in Charles
Evans Cemetery, Reading, PA. It would appear Catharine and Jeremiah
were divorced approximately 1863 - 1870, as Jeremiah moved to Philadelphia and
Catharine didn't. She was living with her son William in Reading's 5th Ward in
1870. In 1880 census she was living with daughters Kate W. Bitting and Susan
Fisher, widow of James Fisher. Catherine died at the home of her daughter Mary
Griesemer, 212 South 3rd St., Reading. She was described as being of "splendid
health and vigor until the evening of Saturday, February 4th, when she sustained
an attack of paralysis." She was survived by one brother, William Nagle
of Pottsville, a son William Bitting, four daughters, Mary Griesemer, Susan Fisher,
Catharine W. Evans and Mrs. T.G.Hill. Jeremiah D. BITTING Esq. and Catharine
S. NAGLE had the following children:
