Seventh Generation

248. Susan BITTING33,38 was born on 4 Jun 1844 in Reading, PA. She died on 12 Sep 1931 in Reading, PA. She was buried in Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading, PA. Member of St. James Lutheran Church. Susan never remarried after her husband's death at age 32. She was living with her daughter Nellie Stafford, at 330 N. Front Street, Reading, when she died.

Susan BITTING and James Johnson FISHER were married about 1867 in Reading, PA. James Johnson FISHER28,38 (son of Henry B. FISHER and Mary B. JOHNSON) was born on 21 Mar 1845 in Colebrookdale Township, Berks Co., PA. He died on 23 Jul 1877 in Reading, PA. He was buried in Aulenbach Cemetery, Reading, PA. James was a carpenter, living at 330 Moss St., Reading. He had the misfortune to be caught up in the excitement surrounding the railroad strike riot at 7th and Penn Streets, Reading. Pennsylvania National Guard troops were sent in to break up the crowds that were blocking the 7th street Reading Railroad tracks. When the crowd started throwing bricks and stone upon them, the young troops opened fire into the crowd. James was one of ten people killed, he took a bullet in the thigh, which penetrated the femoral artery, and he bled to death. He was determined to be an innocent spectator. James had served three years as a musician with Company H, 104th Regiment of PA Volunteers during the Civil War. Note: I have linked James with this family based on his middle initial J, and the fact he served with the same unit as his brother, Henry, in the Civil War. Aulenbach cemetery records also have his plot owned by H. B. Fisher.

Although not by name, James death is noted by a historical marker placed at 7th and Penn Streets which reads, "In 1877, amidst hard times, unrest hit U.S. rail lines. Workers for the Reading Railroad had endured pay cuts. Here, on July 23, militia fired into an unarmed crowd that blocked the trains, and 10 people were killed."
