"We the undersigned, High bailiff of the church of the illustrious Count
Palatine of Guttenberg, attest herewith and in virtue of this brief, that the
bearer hereof, the worthy, honorable and discreet Jean Bertolet, born at Chasteaudeux
in Switzerland, in the district of Berne, with his wife, has for fourteen years
resided constantly in this place, as a tenant on the high estimable Bishopric
with its appertaining farm, with pious, honest, upright and reasonable deportment,
and in such manner as becomes an honest man of laudable conduct, so that we know
nothing to say after him, as well as his housewife, otherwise than all love and
goodness. Besides, these married people have with them five children, and in
prospect for their better advantage and opportunity, they wish to repair to the
New Land of Pennsylvania and there peaceably settle themselves, being fully resolved
and disposed. By virtue of our office we command respect towards, also service
and friendly salutations, and order the aforesaid Jean Bertolet with his housewife
Susanna and five children, not only at all places to pass free and unhindered,
but also by side-roads may assistance be rendered to them because of their commendable
good demeanor of all just intent. To such are we on similar occasions cheerful
to reciprocate, so with the assurance as before mentioned, they have this as
their true Passport (urkundt) to which we have, with out own hand subscribed
our customary seal which is hereunto appended. Given and executed at the place
of chief justice Mumfeldten the nine and twentieth day of the month April as
