10 and eventually ran a broom manufacturing business in the basement of his house
till 1918. He got involved in politics at an early age. He was elected to Reading
City Council in the 1880's, representing the 6th Ward. He referred to himself
as an Independent Republican. He was elected Mayor of Reading in 1893 at age
31, serving one term to 1896. He was active with the Blue Mountain Eagle Climbing
Club and pursued public ownership of the many trails through the mountains. William
was a member of many organizations: Chandler Lodge 227, Excelsior Chapter 237,
Royal Arch Masons, Reading Commandery 42, Knights Templar and the Rajah Temple
Mystic Shriners. Members of the Masonic Order were his pall bearers. He also
was a member at Reading Nest No. 2, Fraternal Order of Orioles, Friendship Fire
Company, Reading Veteran Volunteer Fireman's Assoc. and the Universalist Church.
